Who We Are

Alan Axelson, MD along with his current partners, Stephen Lee, MD and William Law, MD, founded InterCare Psychiatric Services in 1980 as a physician led team of mental health professionals to provide broad consistent access to individuals experiencing the distress of psychiatric illnesses.

It has been my privilege to work for many years as a physician, watching the field of psychiatry evolve and learning from my interaction with patients and families. I find great satisfaction engaging with children, adolescents and adults to develop a shared understanding of each person’s situation, their problems, strengths and relationships, identifying and implementing options that support positive change.

Together we mobilize resources, including the benefits of psychiatric medication, to help people get their lives on track and realize the goals they desire.I am also involved in leadership roles in national professional organizations and bring the lessons of research and innovation from that national experience to the InterCare treatment team. My perspective is shaped by what I have learned from all the patients I have treated through the years.

As a registered nurse practitioner certified in neuroscience, I’ve watched people persevere in times of darkness and uncertainty, by seeking hope, healing and reassurance, with grace.  It is this strength of the human spirit and fascination with the human condition that led me to pursue a doctoral degree in nursing, specializing in psychiatry. My educational training in psychiatry and neurological foundation have given me the confidence to integrate medication management with psychosocial treatments.  I am honored for the opportunity to work together with children, adolescents and adults across the life span to achieve mental health and thrive in life.

It has been my pleasure to have served as a clinical psychologist for a number of years, in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings. Having lived and worked in the South Hills all of my life, I am very familiar with the community and the wide range of mental health problems that people confront. I attended Grove City College, then pursued my master’s degree at Duquesne University, then earned my Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh. My theoretical approach in treating patients is cognitive behavioral therapy. I consider my profession to be a calling, and to that end my goal is to help people to achieve health, happiness and wholeness.

In my extended years of practice as a clinical therapist, I have done individual work with adults and adolescents, as well as family and group therapy for inpatients and outpatients in a psychiatric hospital setting. I did similar work in a special education school-partial hospital program where I was a member of the classroom team. While at the school I developed and ran a program for foster and adoptive parents. I have been the director of casework for an agency serving the visually handicapped and I have done crisis intervention on call for a national crisis care network. For the past 22 years I have been with InterCare working with adults, adolescents, couples, and families. In my wide range of training and experience I have learned to use a variety of therapeutic approaches which I adapt to each individual or family with whom I meet. These include insight-oriented therapy, cognitive-behavior therapy, crisis care, grief work, family-systems work and relaxation-stress reduction therapy. In recent years I have become increasingly interested in and studied a variety of relaxation, stress-reduction and mindfulness meditation approaches which I believe provide long-lasting and sustainable stability that allows for optimal emotional and physical health and well-being.

My passion for promoting mental health is shaped by the many students I have taught in my 25 years of teaching. I am a student advisor for Stand Together Against Stigma,  a program that empowers middle and high school students to combat the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorders. I work together with high school students to educate their peers about how to communicate about mental health and substance use disorders, so that students share their experiences and get assistance when they need it.It is an incredible privilege to learn and work alongside the dedicated professionals at InterCare.

As a founding member of InterCare Psychiatric Services, I have found great satisfaction in improving the lives of many patients. Although I am still an active participant in the leadership of the practice, I no longer see outpatients in our Fort Couch office. I have focused my practice on providing partial hospital and outpatient clinic services at Centerville Clinics in Washington and Greene County

I consider it a privilege to practice medicine, to hear the stories of people in my workday organizing them into a helpful clinical history. I enjoy the art of integrating science and the healing arts in mood disorders, addictions, psychosis, and other disorders that create such great suffering.

Ages Treated:
18-65

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Masters Addiction Counselor who has been working in hospitals and clinics since 2001; and joined the InterCare’s private practice in 2009. I found my passion working with people addicted to substances while completing my master’s degree at Boston College. This led to a Masters Addiction Certification. Having this education and knowledge has helped me gain a better understanding while working in the Medication Assisted Treatment Program we have in the office. Once I became a mother, I quickly found another population that was close to my heart—parents. Over the years, I have expanded my go-to treatment modalities to include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Brief Therapy, Group Therapy, and Mindfulness. Every day, I learn something new and for that I am grateful.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have been practicing in a private practice setting since 2013.  Prior to that, I have had experience working in a psychiatric hospital and providing in-home counseling to at-risk youth.  In my practice, I take an eclectic approach that utilizes components of person-centered therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, psycho-education and trauma-informed care.  I am a trained trauma therapist and I am working on certificates in both Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.  I believe that it is important to provide clients with a supportive and non-judgmental environment where they can present their struggles in a way that promotes processing and healing.  I am always furthering my training and my skill set; therefore, I feel that the collaborative approach offered at InterCare is a good fit.

I am greatly enjoying my outpatient practice of psychiatry. I am constantly learning from the people I see. The psychiatrist-patient relationship is critical to an individual’s healing. Between developing a positive relationship with the people I see, and the recent advances in psychiatry, my practice is increasingly fulfilling as I watch more people improve from the treatments now available.
